Kaftan [caftan]: a long robe worn by Ottoman dignitaries. The art of fabric weaving with its rich materials, its intricate and meaningful designs and the great skill it requires is an important branch of Ottoman court art. Kaftans display great richness in material and design as well as a high standard of technique. The greater part of the Kaftan heritage lies in Topkapi Palace Museum in Istanbul and comprises the greater part of the 2,500 items that are displayed there.

Kaftans were produced with greatest care for the use of Sultan, the Sultan’s family, and members of the court, and occupied an important place among the various other decorative arts of the Saray. Kaftans were generally loosely cut garments open in front, without collars, and with either long or short sleeves. They were made from both plain and patterned materials. The actual form of the garment remained unchanged through successive periods. Ceremonial kaftans were made of costly fabrics such as telli (gilt) chatma, seraser and kemha, and often faced with fur and encrusted with precious stones. They were identical with other kaftans in the form except for the second sleeve, known as a yen, which hung down from the shoulder over the arm. This yen added to the magnificence of the Kaftan and according to Ottoman tradition, it was the custom to kiss the yen on bayrams or during enthronement ceremonies.

SELIM I (R. 1512-1520)

This collection is a compilation of Ottoman kaftan designs created by skillful art and craftsman who at times inspired by Italian artists and Mr. T. Tahir Onder’s creative compositions of these designs reflected in the fine quality carpets manufactured by Klasik Hali to revive our living rooms and welcome the new millennium on the 700th anniversary of the foundation of the Ottoman Empire (1299).

The intricate designs used in the Kaftan Collection rugs are taken from the kaftans of Beyazid II (1481-1512), Selim I (1512-1520), Suleyman the magnificent (1520-1566), Ahmed I (1603-1617) and Murad IV (1623-1640) and other Sultans as well as the pillowcase and blanket fabrics and wall decorations.
